McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish has an interesting history which started in Cincinnati, Ohio. Franchisee Lou Groen McDonald’s restaurant was located in a predominantly Roman Catholic community and h noticed that every Friday there’s a decrease in sales. So, in his quest to boost revenue, he convinced McDonald’s HQ to test a breaded whitefish sandwich recipe.
Naturally, the McD execs weren’t too sure about the idea of adding fish to the menu. McDonald’s Founder Ray Kroc was planning to introduce the Hula Burger –a sandwich that has grilled pineapple (slice) and cheese in it. He made a deal with Groen – they’ll sell both new items on a Friday (at the same time) and the sandwich that would sell the most will be added to the menu.
As it turns out, the Filet-O-Fish won 350 to 6. And so, the Filet-O-Fish became the first new item on the original menu and sold for $0.29 each.

In LA, a Filet O Fish is around $4.29. Here in San Antonio, the Filet O Fish at McDonald’s costs $4.79 while the Filet O fish Meal is $9.49. But in other areas it may cost more. For example, in Pierre South Dakota, the Filet-O-Fish costs $8.19, and the Filet-O-Fish Meal costs $13.79. Prices have indeed gone up. I remember during the pandemic, you could get a Filet O Fish Combo for just $5.99.

Are there any Filet-O-Fish deals at McDonald’s?
I couldn’t find any available deals now but a few months ago McDonald’s had an limited offer where you could buy your 2nd fish filet sandwich for $1. So basically pay the full menu price on the first one and pay only $1 for the second one. In some locations, you can get two fish sandwiches at McDonald’s for just $6.
Is the Filet-O-Fish Menu at McDonald’s Worth the Price?
The Filet-O-Fish and Beverages are actually pretty good. I’m more of a burger guy than a fish sandwich guy so I rarely order this item. But from what I can remember, the fish in this sandwich is very light and decently flakey, and the addition of the cheese and tartar sauce works.
Price-wise maybe it’s a bit on the high side. But let me share some reviews from people who have tried it so you can have a more objective perception of this sandwich:

I had the Filet o Fish and it was good. I am not usually a fast food eater, but I was with some friends and we wanted something fast that was not time consuming at a real sit down restaurant. They had had McDonald’s burgers and fries before and were fine with getting it again. We had about 20 minutes and had to go. I don’t eat burgers so I ordered the filet and it had tartar sauce on it which was good. I found it filling and it served it purpose. Do I want it every day………No, but it was not bad at all. Is it healthy…….No, but hey live a little. Fries were great!

First off the filet o fish looked pathetic for $4.45, sandwich only, see my picture. I remember the filet o fish was a soft bun with a slightly mushy breaded piece of fish which made the sandwich seem moist on the soft side. Today’s filet o fish was nothing like I remember it from the past because it was like hard and on the dry side which was hard to swallow, Tatar sauce on both sides would have helped but it’s just not very good.

This McDonald’s located in the heart of the Place Des Arts/Quartier des Spectacles area. While there are some many restaurant options in the area, one does get a craving for McDonald’s from time to time, and this one did the trick 🙂
